The Florida Humanities Council is co-sponsoring a weeklong residential summer program June 8-13 on the beautiful Eckerd College waterfront campus in St. Petersburg. Open to all Florida students entering 11th or 12th grades. Scholarship assistance is available.

Summer Institute on National Security Studies
The heightened global engagement of the United States in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, has expanded the need to study national security and foreign policy. The increasing demands for a diverse workforce among national security analysts to complement the variety of strategic interests abroad is one consequence of 9/11. Equally important is the need for individuals with strong analytical skills, interests in world affairs broadly defined, and increasing knowledge of the challenges facing the United States and the world in the coming decades. The Jack D. Gordon Institute for Public Policy and Citizenship Studies Summer Institute on National Security Studies is directed toward fostering interest in National Security Studies to a new generation of students at the pre-collegiate level.
The Summer Institute on National Security Studies is a multi-disciplinary one-week program incorporating topics in Geography, Information Technology, World Politics, and various international security issues. Summer Institute activities include keynote lectures by Intelligence Community professionals and prominent academics, a GIS (Geographic Information Systems) lab, an Effective Communication (writing & public speaking) workshop, an Intelligence Community career day panel with speakers, a tour of FIU Modesto A. Maidique Campus, and a capstone simulation on a security issue based on the Summer Institute’s theme. Past Summer Institutes have focused on War Crimes (2007), Pearl Harbor (2008), Energy & Environmental Security in the Americas (2009), and the Challenges of Transnational Crime (2010.)
All materials associated with the program will be provided. Bus transportation may be arranged and provided by Miami-Dade County Public Schools. FIU parking passes may also be provided as needed for the participants. Please note that the Summer Institute is a limited-selection-based program.
For participating teachers, a two-day workshop is held parallel to the student activities during the Summer Institute. The two-day teacher program consists of discussions on active learning education methods, materials to broaden National Security Studies in the classroom, as well as FIU and MDC lecturers presenting overviews on various security issues.
